LE CROISIC

The population fished off Le Croisic does not offer much variety.
It is widely dominated by the form lineata, which is represented by more than seven collected specimens out of ten. The remainder oscillates between concolor and maculata, and is mainly brown to maroon, with some rare shells of a sharp orange; there are no other colors. The average size is bigger than elsewhere, ranging from 6 to 8cm.
This could mean that the fishing zone exploited this year had not been dredged since many generations.

Variations of the form lineata.
A little quarter of these shells show traces of yellow, but full yellow/orange backgrounds remain scarce.

The form concolor is rare in this area; on 50 collected specimens (non lineata), only one tends to this form (see pop-up picture). The other shells present two series of patterns, and, as said above, remain brownish.

First set: the pattern is mainly concentrated on the ribs.

Second set: true maculata. Traces of yellow & orange remain rare.

Other colors:
Red, dark brown, pure yellow are virtually absent in this area. Specimens tending to albinism do exist, and seem to belong only to the form lineata. They remain uncommon.
The only color other than brown is the sharp orange yellow, as pictured below:

Birth of the form lineata:

Let us recall that what distinguishes lineata from the other forms is the existence, on each rib, of a fine dark line. A pure lineata is white, without any other pattern on the ribs that this fine line. The links below open two pages where the appearance of this feature is shown.
