North Sea to Canarias, Madeira to Mediterranean & Black Sea.
Synonyms: desmarestii, elata, lactoides, leucoma, lineolata, luteola. Above and below: 2-5m deep, in sand, Lozari bay, Isola Rossa, NW. Corsica. 18mm.
Habitat: in sand, from lower intertidal to circa 20m deep.
Young specimen from shallow sands at Le-Grau-du-Roi, Gard, South France. Size: 8mm. Close to Turton’s Lucina leucoma (cf. drawing):
« Medium-sized shell, suborbicular; umbo slightly prominent, almost median; valves fairly domed; anterior part hardly higher and larger than the posterior one; lower margin well round; test shiny, adorned with thin concentric striae; colour of a pale light brown… » – A. 1-2m deep, on sand and mud flats, off Grado, Friuli Venezia Giulia, NE. Italy. 19mm.
12m deep, on sand, north Kolokitha cove, Elounda, NW. of Kolpos Mirabellou, Lasithi, N. Crete. 17mm. The species is never abundant.
The channel between Spinalonga main island and Kolokitha islet (pictured) has two sheltered coves, in which Lucinids spend a quiet life.
« Shell equivalve, subequilateral, rather thin, but rather solid and opaque. Form lenticular, rather bulging. Anterior edge a little excavated below the summits, then sloping; posterior border and ventral edge well rounded. Summits rather prominent, contiguous, curved towards the anterior side. Lunula rather deep, heart-shaped, limited by a furrow. Surface dull, decorated with concentric streaks and irregular lamellae, some of which, more developed, indicate successive periods of growth. Hinge of the left valve composed of a cardinal fossula accompanied on each side by a small obtuse tooth; lateral teeth and ligament fossa similar to those of the right valve. » – Ibid.
