Karnekampia sulcata (O.F. Müller, 1776)
Iceland & Norway to Cabo Verde, Mediterranean. The species lives attached to deep water corals and various wrecks, cables etc., on continental shelf, margins and shelf slopes.
Original taxon: Pecten sulcatus.
80-100m deep, attached to a cable, Capri, Napoli, Campania, W. Italy. 12mm.
Synonyms: aratra Gmelin, mundus Reeve, bruei Payraudeau.
The shell is covered with scales, the auricles are cancellate. Gibraltar area, 16mm.
Chlamys Bruei in Payraudeau: « I do not know of any other species which offers a similar arrangement in its rays; those of the upper valve alternate in size, the intermediates are smaller; those of the lower valve are joined together two by two, both are striated in length and dotted; their number is variable according to the size of the individuals.
