Haliris trapezoidea (Seguenza, 1876)
Mediterranean, Black Sea. Deep circalittoral to at least the continental slope, on detritic muddy bottoms. Original taxon: Verticordia trapezoidea.

« The Marchese di Monterosato kindly informed me by letter that he had recently caught a new species in the seas of Palermo, which I had already collected in the Pliocene and called V. trapezoidea; this species fished in the Mediterranean and in many places in the Atlantic was believed to be V. granulata, which is perhaps not yet known alive. » – G. Seguenza: “Cenni intorno alle Verticordie fossili del Plioceno italiano : nota”, Rendiconti dell’ Accademia delle Scienze Fisiche e Matematiche vol. XV, Napoli 1876, p.2.

« This is a species very similar to the previous one, but smaller and more depressed, of exactly trapezoidal shape, and with the apices curved towards the anterior region, but small, slightly protruding, not coiled. » – Op. cit. p.6. The radial costae are less numerous than in granulata: about 18 vs. circa 20-25; the posterior margin is bordered by a strong rib, more prominent than the costae. Above: a specimen dredged at 200m deep, off Dubrovnik, S. Croatia. 3,3mm. Original pictures provided by R. Stanić (HR) – (CC BY-NC-SA).
