Chamelea striatula (da Costa, 1778)
Norway to Canarias, Madeira to Mediterranean & Black Sea. Lower intertidal to outer shelf, in soft sediments.
Original taxon: Petunculus striatulus.
Synonyms: laminosa, lusitanica, pallida, sulcata
The lunula is less pronounced in Ch. striatula than in Ch. gallina (Rufino & al., 2006).
30-40m deep, Málaga, Andalucia, S. Spain. 22mm.
An other difference between striatula and gallina is the sculpture, made of sharp concentric lamellae. But this feature does not seem to be completely decisive. Above, some samples of Venus striatula in Forbes & Hanley: British mollusca vol. 4, London 1853, via BHL. One notices, on figure 4-left, a shells that looks quite like a gallina, with the pattern of a striatula.
20-30m deep off Junquera, Moanha, Galicia, NW. Spain. 18mm.
