Tritia coralligena (Pallary, 1900)
Cádiz to Canarias, Alborán, W. Mediterranean.
Scavenger in the upper circalittoral (rare) to shelf depths, mostly on coral bottoms. Original taxon: Nassa coralligena.
Above and below: trawled at 80-150m deep, off Málaga, Andalucia, S. Spain. 7-8,5mm.
« Cute waxy-coloured species, close to N. corrugata Brocchi, of which it differs by its larger protoconch and its more interspaced and striated costae. Of all the variants of N. ferussaci, it is the var. “castanea” that shares the largest number of characteristics with our form. But N. coralligena is rounder, its aperture is higher and thicker, its costae more arcuate, with the interspaces strongly striated; lastly, the base of the canal is larger. » – P. Pallary: “Coquilles marines du littoral du départment d’Oran”, Journal de Conchyliologie ser. IV vol. II, Paris 1900.
