Tornus mienisi
van Aartsen, Carrozza & Menkhorst, 1998
Northeastern Mediterranean.

Micrograzer in the infralittoral, « frequently encountered in very fine beachdrift » (H. K. Mienis: “New or little known molluscs from the Eastern Mediterranean” 1-3, Levantina vol. 32, p.387-388). The shell is « rather depressed and heavily sculptured, with a flange of material around the periphery. » – van Aartsen & al.: “Tornus mienisi, a new species of Tornus from the Eastern Mediterranean (Mollusca: Prosobranchia)”, Bollettino Malacologico vol. 33(9-12), Milano 1998, p.135. The shell is much flatter than in subcarinatus, and reaches bigger sizes. The protoconch is also more developed: circa 1,5whorl, vs. less than 1 in mediterrranean subcarinatus (specimens from Atlantic seem to have a protoconch of 1,5 whorls also, and the question is pending: how many species are grouped into subcarinatus?)

Above and below: 7m deep, in grit, Burnaz plajı, Erzin, Hatay province, SE. Turkey. 1,9mm.
The species is named after Henk K. Mienis, from Hebrew University, Jerusalem, who discovered it.
