A specimen at Naxos island, Cyclades, S. Aegean. Original picture provided by R. Pillon for WoRMS – (CC BY-NC-SA).
« Aperture oval, a little callous at the posterior angle, this part being distinct of the umbilical callus by a slight indentation; umbilicus entirely covered by callus, leaving only a slight anterior fissure penetrating its interior. » – A. d’Orbigny: “Mollusques” vol. II, in R. de la Sagra: Histoire physique, politique et naturelle de l’île de Cuba vol. V, Paris 1853, p.34 of the volume. – 30m dep, Málaga, Andalucia, S. Spain. 17mm.
« Colour whitish. Tawny, longitudinal, oblique, wavy, often bifurcated lines covering the whole shell; they are nevertheless interrupted near the suture, where they form spots, and on the middle of the shell, where they leave a transverse white band. This charming species, well distinguished by its umbilical callous and its lines, lives on the island of Cuba, from where it was brought to us by M. de la Sagra. »Ibid. Such confusion about origins may have occurred when the author had too many specimens on his desktop.

Original drawings, showing a pure spanish shell, provided by J. Higueras Gimenez (ES) – (CC BY-NC-ND).
80-150m deep, Málaga. 15mm.
« This species was found allegedly at La Nouvelle, near Narbonne. It is common on the coast of Málaga (Spain), and it is found in Corsica, Sicily, Morea. We think it was by mistake that it was mentioned as coming from Cuba. » – C. A. Récluz: “Des Natices propres aux côtes de la France continentale”, Journal de conchyliologie vol. III, Paris 1852, p.272. – 15-20m deep, on sand, Málaga. 19mm.
