Raphitoma alleryana (Sulliotti, 1889)
Mediterranean.
Predator in the infralittoral.
Original taxon: Philbertia alleryana. Synonym: bofilliana.

« Extremely elegant shape, very distinct from its congeners due to its slender appearance produced by the rapid development of the whorls, by the subtle reticulation in which the little elevation of the ribs gives it a naked-eye beaded appearance, by the impression of the suture, by the weak denticulation of the external lip, by the shortness and little inflection of the tail, and finally by the lightness of the shell and its colour. I gave this species the name of my honourable friend and teacher Marchese T. Allery Di Monterosato who was always full of advice and of scientific material. » – G. R. Sulliotti: “Comunicazioni malacologiche I”, Bullettino della Società Malacologica Italiana vol. XIV, Pisa 1889, p.33.

Protoconch paucispiral.
The row of white buttons on the last whorl is typical.
8m deep, a the edge of a Posidonia meadow, Tenda Bay, north of Itanos, Palaikastro, Sitia, NE. Crete. 4mm.

Later, Sulliotti changed the epithet alleryana, which he said it was preoccupied by a fossil Raphitoma; the selected replacement-name honoured « the distinguished spanish malacologist A. Bofill y Poch » (Ibid. p.67).
