Pseudofusus buzzurroi
(Prkić & Russo, 2008)
NE. Adriatic Sea.
Predator in the low infralittoral and circalittoral, mostly in red coral environments, along the coast of Dalmatia. The type-locality is Mljet island, off Dubrovnik, S. Croatia.

Immature specimens can be confused with Pseudofusus dimitrii, but the shell is less slender, it bears fewer axial ribs, and has a shorter and more open siphonal canal; it differs from parvulus by its stouter shape, the fewer ribs, the carinated shape, the whorls more convex, and the spiral cords that are darker than the body, while parvulus is uniform in colour. – Above and below: a young specimen (the spirals are just starting to darken) from 80m deep, Mljet island. 9,5mm.
The species is named after the conchologist Giovanni Buzzurro. Above: details of the mamillate protoconch.
« Teleoconch whorls convex, slightly carinated by an obvious, but not very raised, keel, separated by well-marked, but not canaliculated sutures. The sculpture consists of strong, raised and wellspaced axial ribs, 6-7 on each whorl, rarely 8, and closely spaced primary spiral cords, which are stronger where they pass over the axial ribs. The spiral sculpture also consists of secondary threads, which are more evident on the last two or three whorls. The body whorl represents 60-64% of the total shell height. Aperture oval, outer lip varicose, internally lirate with 7-10 elongate teeth, columellar callus thin, but obvious. A parietal tooth is well evident in the upper part of aperture. Some studied specimens show two or three columellar folds, more or less evident, which are caused by the underlying primary spiral cords, at the base of the columella. Siphonal canal short, broad and curved, slightly deviating to the left when seen in apertural view. » – Prkić & Russo: “Pseudofusus buzzurroi (Gastropoda: Fasciolariidae), a new species from Croatian coast”, Iberus vol.26(2), Barcelona 2008, p.2.
