Red Sea to E. Mediterranean, S. Aegean.
Grazer in the shallow infralittoral, in rocky areas.
First mediterranean discovery on Karpathos island in 1969.
A synonym is crassilabra (thick-lipped) by E. A. Smith, 1885.
Shallow water, on stones, Haifa area, NW. Israel. 21mm.
Other synonym: marmorata Reeve.
In fact, the shell is not always red.
 
The Marbled Nerite: « Shell orbicularly depressed, rather thick, spire obtusely impressed, whorls convex, broad towards the aperture, irregularly spirally ridged, and linearly grooved, aperture expanded, lip effused, columella slanting, sometimes minutely toothed; bluish-white, sparingly mottled with blue-black. » – L. A. Reeve: Conchologia iconica vol. IX, London 1856, Species 67 and plate XVI of the Nerites.
A subadult from Haifa. 15,1mm.
