Murexsul cevikeri (Houart, 2000)
Central and eastern Mediterranean, Aegean. Predator in the upper infralittoral (from the shore to 12m deep in S. Italy, according to Reitano & al., 2009) down to the low circalittoral. Previously confused with some winged forms of cristata.

3-5m deep, on rocks, Gallipoli, Lecce, Puglia, S. Italy. 20-24mm.
Sharp varices and spines arranged along axial ridges. Larger than cristata, the shell has a biconical shape, due to a strong shoulder made of only one spiral keel (there is sometimes an abapical cord, but weak). This is an uncommon species, which almost always shows some traces of spiral bands: « The colour is also interesting as I never observed any form of M. cristatus with such a constant pattern. » – R. Houart: “New species of Muricidae (Gastropoda) from the northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean sea”, Zoosystema 22(3), Paris 2000, p.468. – 3m deep, on limestone bank, Marathi beach, Souda bay, Chania, NW. Crete. 31mm.
« Named after Dogan Çeviker, Istanbul, Turkey, who provided the type material and very useful information about turkish muricids. » – R. Houart: ibid. p.466.

Uncommon pale specimen, with weak traces of banding.
60-80m deep, La Maddalena archipelago, Olbia-Tiempo, NE. Sardinia. 31,5mm.
