Melanella lubrica (Monterosato, 1890)
Norway and Sweden to Mediterranean. Ectoparasite on some buried-living Holoturians in the infralittoral-circalittoral, such as Hemiocnus syracusanus (Grube, 1840).
Original taxon: Acicularia lubrica. Fresh specimens show a spiral microsculpture that is characteristic of the species (interspaces circa 7µm).

Jeffreys (British conchology IV, p.203 & V. p214) proposes the taxon Eulima intermedia Cantraine 1835 var. “solidula” Monterosato (cf. plate LXXVII fig.4). The professor W. H. Dall found a complete identity between the shell described by Jeffreys and the exotic species Eulima oleacea of Kurtz & Simpson. Thereby, Monterosato: « I feel a great repugnance to identify the local shells with those of distant seas, and under this impression I propose, for the species in discussion, the name of lubrica instead of oleacea. Perhaps I could have used that of rubro-tincta given by Jeffreys to its smallest variety, sometimes distorted, in which the colour of the animal is red, but besides the fact that this form does not respond to our type, and that I would have to replace another name for this variety, the animal of the species of this and of the previous group and of a large part of the Eulimae, is dyed red. The word rubro-tincta, therefore, becomes inappropriate to designate one species. » – T. A. di Monterosato: “Conchiglie della profondità del mare di Palermo”, Il Naturalista Siciliano anno 9 (1889-1890), Palermo 1890, p.159.
