Mathilda quadricarinata (Brocchi, 1814)
Azores to Mediterranean, Madeira to Cabo Verde archipelago. Bay of Biscay? (Jeffreys in Locard, 1897). Possibly found also in Biafra Gulf, Angola… Predator on sessile Cnidarians in the infralittoral, down to the continental shelf and slope (132-666m, “Porcupine”). Original taxon: Turbo quadricarinatus. The description given by Brocchi shows the essence of the species: « This elegant shell has the appearance of the spindle of a printing press, and bears four keels on each whorl, the three lower being more prominent than the other, the second more than the first and the third, while the fourth, on the upper part, is very narrow. » – G. B.
