Haliotis mykonosensis
Owen, Hanavan & Hall, 2001
Central Mediterranean, from Corsica to Corfu, to Crete. Also found in Croatia (Molunat, Zadar).
Herbivore and grazer in the shallow infralittoral, often found near or under stones covered with red coralline algae, on which it feeds, in the vicinity of Posidonia meadows.
2-8m, in crevices, Elafonisi, Kissamos, W. Crete. 25-25mm.
In wrecks on shallow reef, near the railway, in the harbour, Isola Rossa, NW. Corsica. 28-31mm.
Punta di Spanu, Lumio, NW. Corsica. 27-31mm.
Unlike in the close species tuberculata lamellosa, the epipodial projections of the mantle are very ramified. Above: specimen found betweeen Kukljica and Kali, northeastern coast of Ugljan island, in front of Zadar, Croatia. Size: 41mm. Original pictures provided by A. Petani (HR) – (CC BY-NC-SA).
Large adult collected among seaweeds, southern coast of Évvia island, Central Greece. 30,8mm.
Differences with tuberculata lamellosa: the thin and undulating grooves, associated to the absence of strongly marked radial sculpture, can sometimes give a characteristic feature, depending of the population (relatively reliable with the large aegean specimens, but often of poor use in Corsica or in Crete). Notice also how the ventral margin is almost straight in mykonosensis and always rounded in lamellosa (again relatively reliable with the large aegean specimens, but often of poor use in Corsica or in Crete). Above: a mykonosensis of about 37mm collected at 7m deep near Posidonia meadow, Vouliagmeni area, Attikí, SE. Greece, compared to a folded lamellosa of 33mm from 6m deep, Kythnos Island, western Cyclades, S. Aegean.
