(?)Coccopigya viminensis (Rocchini, 1990)
Gulf of Cádiz, Alborán Sea and at least the western part of Mediterranean, on sunken woods in bathyal depths.
Original taxon: Cocculina viminensis.

« Mollusc with a capuliform, suboval, very elevated and robust shell, covered by a downy periostracum which, fading towards the apex, makes it appear glabrous, as is the case with juvenile specimens. Sculpture: marked radial lines which, intersecting thick and irregular concentric lines, form a surface similar to the weave of wicker baskets, obsolete towards the apex. Colour: hyaline brown. Apex: prominent but small, forming the spiral of a single whorl, oriented indifferently among the various specimens to the right, left or center and positioned approximately ⅓ from the posterior margin. » – R. Rocchini : “Cocculina viminensis n.sp.”, Bollettino Malacologico vol. 26, Milano 1990, p.48.

The shell of this species differs from that of the more commonly encountered C. spinigera by the « higher and relatively thinner shell, protoconch overhanging abruptly from the teleoconch and not partially hidden, lesser number of thinner radial lines and short spines of the periostracum (3-5 instead 5-6), and broader oral lappets » – Dantart & Luque: “Cocculiniformia and Lepetidae (Gastropoda: Archaeogastropoda) from Iberian waters”, Journal of Molluscan Studies vol. 60(3), London 1994, p.280. Is this enough to certify the validity of this species? Only anatomical studies would give a definitive answer.
