Babelomurex benoiti (Tiberi, 1855)
Mediterranean to Gabon. Predator on sponges in circalittoral zone, down to at least 120m deep (Malta, 1979).

« Rare species, of a singular shape, which lives in the coralligenous bottoms of the Mediterranean, found together with the coral in the sea of Algeria and in that of Sardinia by the fishermen of the Torre del Greco. » Shell « ovate, turreted, with a pointed apex. Its aperture together with the channel exceeds by one fourth the length of the body whorl. It has seven very convex whorls, carinated, longitudinally folded (the folds are 11-12) encircled and sculpted by strong cords composed of imbricated squamae. […] The carina, which is placed a little far from the suture, is adorned with large triangular laminae. […] Internally furrowed lip. Straight tail, long, thick with an umbilicus surrounded by the biggest scales of all. » – N. Tiberi: op. cit.
