« Shell thick, very smooth, shiny, of a dark brown variegated with white and yellowish. Sculpture made of nodulous transverse lines disposed away from each other. » – A. Risso: Histoire naturelle des principales productions de l’Europe Méridionale… vol. IV, Paris 1826. The main difference with banded specimens of A. cimex is given by the protoconch: planktotrophic in cimex, lecithotrophic in mamillata.

25-35m deep, Üç Adalar, Tekirova, Kemer, Antalya province, S. Turkey. 4mm.
50m deep, on detritic bottom with coral debris, Scilla, Calabria, Messina Strait, SW Italy. 3,9mm. Alvania cimex has a smaller apex and is, usually, a bit less translucent.
Also, the base of the last whorl is slightly concave in mamillata, while it is convex in cimex. 36m deep, San Giovanni Li Cuti, Catania, E. Sicily. 3,8mm.
