Alvania beanii (Hanley in Thorpe, 1844)
Norway to Canarias, Azores to Mediterranean. The species exists for at least 5,3 million years. Grazer and detritus feeder. On hard substrates and among seaweeds, from lower subtidal to continental shelf. Discovered by William Bean, conchologist, and sent to his friend S. Hanley, who described it in C. Thorpe: British marine conchology, London 1844. Nota bene that “Charles Thorpe” is a pseudonym for Sylvanus Hanley.

Original taxon: Cingula beanii.
Synonyms: reticulatus, tenuicostata, textilis
50-80m deep, on algae, Málaga, Andalucia, S. Spain. 3,6mm.
Other synonym: calathus. Above: a specimen with less radials than on the previous shell, but with a sharper sculpture.

A stocky shell, between beanii and the variant “hispidula” Monterosato: 26m deep, Punta de la Mona, east of La Herradura, Granada, Andalucia. 2,9mm.

Apex acute; protoconch minute, smooth, paucispiral; transition to teleoconch hardly visible, marked by an opisthocline sinusigera border. 30m deep, Punta de la Mona. 3,3mm.
